The loss of Han van Putten

Han van Putten

Han van Putten

Pioneer of the right to the habitat with no frontiers

Han van Putten born May 28, 1922, died October 25, 2009 at his home in The Hague (Netherlands). Han was married to the late Anneke van Putten-Torensma, Father of Sietske, Frank, Marc, Willem (dec.) and Rebecca and dear Friend of Lidie Luursema.

In a long and productive life Han obtained his law degree in Leiden, and started his work at the Dutch Office of Foreign Affairs. Later he became Secretary General of IULA (International Union of Local Authorities), Chair of the UN Habitat Forum in Vancouver, and, upon his 'retirement' he began the job of first Secretary General of HIC (Habitat International Coalition). Till the very last days he remained interested and committed to the ideals of his youth and continued to support the causes of housing right, better governance, participatory democracy, international understanding, tolerance and cooperation.
We will miss the contributions he has made to our lives, his love, friendship and wisdom.

Han van Putten lives on!

We have received the sad news about the loss of Han van Putten, founder of HIC, and who has always been involved in the fight for the right to housing and the city.

For us, he was also a very good friend, with whom we crossed many borders together to learn about the complexities of urban and housing issues.
We remember his ideals, his involvement, his openness, even during the creation of the International Alliance of Inhabitants. Therefore, we are convinced that something from has fed the roots of the next World Assembly of Inhabitants.

Han,
you will continue to be a friend, and a comrade for us all, for the right to the city and housing without borders, as well as beyond the final frontier
