The Housing Rents Drama in Caracas
The Right to Housing and the City. The Metropolitan Network of Tenants, The Tenants’ Network, The Urban Land Committees, the United Superintendents of Venezuela and the Pioneers’ Camp (La Red Metropolitana de Inquilinos, La Red de Inquilinos, Los Comités de Tierra Urbana, Conserjes Unidos por Venezuela y los Campamentos de Pioneros) are organizations fighting against evictions and for the right to housing. They have created a united platform and decided to fight to end the speculation coming from real estate companies, particularly in Caracas, where the housing deficit has reached close to 1 million families.

A Dominican Proposal to the National and International Community The International IAI Days (Santo Domingo, 18th – 25th April 2007)
had a direct impact on the local situation due to the fact that they had as their base the city of Santo Domingo, where the European Colonization of the Americas began in 1492, as did resistance to it. It is the capital of the Dominican Republic, one of the countries with the highest percentage of people (more than 50% of the population of the city of Santo Domingo) living in insecurity and permanently subjected to forced evictions.
Founding meeting of FOVELIC
More than one hundred representatives of various housing areas and residents’ associations were present at the foundation of the Federation of Neighbourhood Associations of Lima and Callao (FOVELIC) on Sunday 28 January 2007.
COOPHABITAT is born in the Dominican Republic
11 February 2007: the Cooperative for Social Housing and Habitat Production, COOPHABITAT, was formally established with the endorsement of the government of the Dominican Republic. COOPHABITAT has a list of 173 founding members, share capital of over 125,000 pesos, and an estimated one and a half million potential members in Santo Domingo Province and the National District alone.
Launch of the Zero Evictions Campaign in Venezuela
On 3 March 2007, in the Universidad Bolivariana de Venezuela, the ‘Zero Evictions’ campaign was launched by a platform of organisations working for the right to housing and the democratisation of the city.

Abril 2007 La primera acción tuvo lugar en la ciudad de Betim-RMBH donde el movimiento afiliado a la entidad ocupó un terreno de la alcaldía donde están acampando 48 familias sin vivienda de la ciudad, para que el alcalde Carlaile Pedrosa cumpla la promesa que hiciera al movimiento en la campaña de construcción de 10 mil casas para familias de bajos ingresos.
The ties are strengthening
Lima, April 9 (Info-viviendadigna) Following a visit to Lima, Pedro Franco, representative of the Zero Evictions Campaign lead by the International Alliance of Inhabitants (IAI), undertook to present a report on the problems of the colonies in Lima and Callao before the United Nations. The Dominican social leader ended his three-day visit of Lima on April 3, after an extensive visit of the colonies. Franco’s activities began on Saturday March 31 with a meeting with the board of administration of the Federation of Organisations of the Neighbourhoods of Lima and Callao (FOVELIC).
International IAI Days in Dominican Republic
The international IAI Days will be held in Santo Domingo from April 18 to 26, 2007, organized by the International Alliance of Inhabitants in collaboration with numerous social, academic and institutional partners.
Towards the national caravan to Brasilia
The CONAM’s national campaign of struggle for development, employment, urban reform and social rights. The national campaign of struggle of the National Confederation of Residents’ Associations (CONAM) was launched by CONAM’s National Council of Associated Bodies (CONEA) in December of 2006. Its objective is to mobilize the grassroots community movement and supporters of the Residents’ Associations in the struggle for social rights such as education, health, housing, sanitation and public transport among others, with an instrument for the universalization of these rights; generation of income and employment and a new cycle of economic and social development for the country. Also on the agenda is the amnesty of the Residents’ Associations and Neighborhood Friends’ Societies for Inland Revenue debts dating back to the 1990s.
