AFP - A few hundred people demonstrated in Paris on Saturday, in answer to the call from several associations, to demand the implementation of the Requisition Act concerning empty buildings.

After a brief gathering in front of the Notre-Dame de Lorette church (9th arrondissement), the march made up of activists, particularly from the Collectif Jeudi Noir (the Black Thursday Action Group), the Association Droit au Logement (DAL - Right to Housing Association), the ATD Quart Monde and the Comité des Sans Logis (Homeless Group), passed in front of several empty buildings.

Marching behind a banner proclaiming "Urgency, Requisitions", they chanted slogans calling for "solidarity with the poorly housed (people)" or denouncing "evictions without re-housing".

Standing in front of a six-floor property, which has been empty for two years and which belongs to the Bank of China on rue Laffitte (9th arrondissement), Jean-Baptiste Eyraud called the attention of the "State (which) does not re-house those seeking housing, the homeless and all the young people who struggle everyday" in search of a roof over their heads.

These buildings, like the one in rue Saint-Marc (2nd arrondissement) and in rue Montmartre (2nd arrondissement), belong to lending or insurance organisations and have all been vacant for a number of years.

According to Julien Bayou of the Collectif Jeudi Noir, some buildings, such as the one on rue Saint-Marc, which the spokesperson of DAL showed to political and show business figures like actress Josiane Balasko or Miou-Miou, have been unoccupied for 10 years.

Olivier Besancenot pressed for the "recovery of the thousands of square metres that are rotting in towns", and which belong to "some organisations at the heart of financial speculation". "While the Requisition Act concerning empty building remains unenforced, people have no roofs over their heads and people are dying of hunger", he confirmed.

According to the DAL, a delegation will go to the Elysée at around 11 a.m. on Tuesday to present the requests for requisitions.
