Salvador: Inhabitants at the 2018 WSF for R-Existences, Creating and Transforming
Inhabitants from all over the world will meet in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, from 13 to 17 March 2018, as part of the World Social Forum, the largest gathering of social movements, to stand together and reclaim their existence, through more than a thousand activities.
The IAI will be presenting Inhabitants R-Existences in Solidarity, in the Brazil Session of the International Tribunal on Evictions and the First Forum of People’s Territorial R-Existences. Tessential, the workshop on network training for the right to territory.
Since 2001, social movements have continued to grow at each Forum meeting, diversifying alongside the challenges they face in their respective countries. They are faced with fundamentalisms, wars and xenophobia, and increasing repression of freedoms. Defense of rights to worship, and atheism, against racism and homophobia, are examples of resistance which have had to become more active and responsive, more strategic and political. So much so that ordinary citizens have found themselves by force of circumstances in the front line of politics at all levels.
Thus, in the framework of WSF 2018, the International Alliance of Inhabitants presents Inhabitants R-Existences in Solidarity, in order to:
- establish the New Agenda for Inhabitants from the World Popular Social Forum Resistance to Habitat III, the alternative to the New Urban Agenda of the UN in 2016,
- strengthen and reinforce the process of building the Urban and Community Way, a space and collective way to share the experiences, strategies and management of common tools of global solidarity with local struggles,
- implement the recommendations of the Quito International Tribunal on Evictions to uphold the human rights of more than 60 million people evicted or threatened globally.
The fact that the WSF is back in Brazil, where it all started, is auspicious. Alterglobalism has gone through so many citizens’ revolts around the world, and so many wars since the so-called "Arab Spring"; starting with the Tunisian popular uprising that spawned WSF 2013 and 2015. These were challenging moments for the WSF in themselves and also necessitated a search for a new form of alterglobalism, more able to meet the expectations of social movements at that time.
Below you will find the “WSF Inhabitants program”, which encompasses all the activities of our allies’ and friends’ grassroots organizations and inhabitants networks, within the framework of the theme "Right to the City". The Water Theme will be the next step, immediately after the WSF, where popular movements will be at the Alternative World Water Forum (Brasilia, 17-22 March 2018), to “re-exist” and resist privatization policies.
