ПУТЬ ГОРОДА

Happy 2011! A Year for inhabitants to take back their rights, build another possible world!

We’ve had enough of being considered objects with neither minds nor bodies, trash to be used and then swept aside pitilessly, expelled to settle elsewhere. In 2011, and for the good of all, the World Assembly of Inhabitants will finally show that the time has come for the homeless, the badly housed and the evicted to show that they are capable of standing up in solidarity and to resist the cracking whip of neoliberalism and to create an alternative to this global force of repression. You are invited to get involved, making this the year of the success for inhabitants to take back their rightful claims, by supporting the World Assembly of Inhabitants!
Here's how …

We’ve had enough of counting, with a sense of helplessness, the growing numbers of the homeless, the badly housed, the evicted, and all the consequences of the global crisis of neoliberalism, fueled as they are by wars and by property speculation.

We’ve had enough of being considered objects with neither minds nor bodies, trash to be used and then swept aside pitilessly, expelled to settle elsewhere.

We’ve had enough of waiting patiently, separate and divided against ourselves, for a right to inhabit that is denied by the market and trampled on by public authorities.

In 2011, and for the good of all, the World Assembly of Inhabitants will finally show that

  • the time has come for the homeless, the badly housed and the evicted to show that they are capable of standing up in solidarity and to resist the cracking whip of neoliberalism and to create an alternative to this global force of repression.
  • the time has come for inhabitants to be recognized as builders, holders of the right to inhabit and the responsibility to as create fair, sustainable, and safe human settlements.
  • the time has come for inhabitants’ organizations to come together to claim their rightful place of honor in a new Urban Social Pact founded on the principle of the universal right to housing.

You are invited to get involved, making this the year of the success for inhabitants to take back their rightful claims, by supporting the World Assembly of Inhabitants!

  • Support the participation in the WAI of those who are usually excluded from international meetings

Include them in the delegations that your network will send to Dakar, or make a contribution online

. In exchange you will receive a dvd with the Inhabitants’ Song and supporting texts/documentation from National Network of Inhabitants of Cameroon (RNHC), IAI’s partner organization, as well as a dvd of the work of the World Assembly of Inhabitants. Those who contribute the most will receive a guided tour around the beneficiaries’ home towns.

  • Create and work with Steering Committees of the WAI in your region

This is a virtual meeting space for sharing experience and strategies and for building solidarity and plans for working towards Dakar. You can find information on the World Assembly of Inhabitants web site, here: http://www.habitants.org/the_urban_way/world_assembly_of_inhabitants

  • Propose a self-managed activity for the WAI meetings in Dakar

You can register a workshop on the 2011 WSF site  before the deadline of 9 January 2011, remembering to mention WAI.

  • Take part in the marches heading to Dakar

If you are from a neighboring country you can take part in the Social Movements Caravan . Others should consult the WAI website .

  • Organize a videolink to the WAI sessions in your home or community

This can be done easily anywhere in the world.  You can take part in the debates and discussions with an internet connection, a projector and a room.  More information on Dakar Extended .

  • Provide follow-up to the WAI

After Dakar we expect to build on links and alliances with other organizations working towards the Urban Way, as well as partnerships with NGOs, universities, local officials and foundations who share our desire to build a new Urban Social Pact.
